“The difference between Democrats and Republicans in Somerset County couldn’t be clearer when it comes to representing everyone as opposed to picking sides. The report today that Jack Ciattarelli, the top of the GOP ticket and Somerset County resident, says that teaching LGBTQ+ history in schools is the same as ‘teaching sodomy to sixth graders’ once again points out the difference,” stated County Chairwoman Peg Schaffer. Somerset County Democrats know that their job is to serve every Somerset County resident and every Somerset County student. We are lucky to have elected officials, such as Commissioner Melonie Marano, a champion for the LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, who understand that mission.
Sadly, the Somerset County and New Jersey Republicans do not. They, in their candidate for Governor Jack Ciattarelli’s own words, want to be sure no one learns of LGBTQ+ contributions to our county, state, or country. Instead, Jack and his running mates prefer we go back to the old days when public insults to the gay community are the only acceptable recognition.
Somerset County Democrats call upon their Republican counterparts to join them in denouncing Jack Ciattarelli’s divisive beliefs.
